I worked up a new project for the DIGITS exhibit at the DVAA in Narrowsburg, NY. The piece has a high intensity beam light located on the New York side of the Delaware River. An Arduino is used to make the light flash Morse code. On the PA side of the river is a screen playing video of the river, the site of the screen and an office interior with a lone worker. A computer using a web cam and Isadora plays the video. When the Isadora patch ’sees’ the light it triggers audible Morse code and wiped the video image off the screen.

You can read more about the piece and see samples here.

I’ll be participating in the

2009 DIGIT Exposition in Narrowburg, NY JUNE 12-14.

For the show I am developing a new outdoor media piece which spans the Deleware river. On one side of the river will be a high powered beam light which will flash morse code. By pointing the beam onto a video projection across the river, the light will wipe off the imagery. The code and the video relate to trade [commerce] and borders as they they relate to processes of naturalizing systematized behavior.

I’ll add documentation as soon as it is available.

back in the states

August 19th, 2008

This will be a quick one. I returned to the states having had my attempts at regular blogging foiled by a population far too concerned with home network security. Seriously, the only networks I found were at major hotels and they were very expensive.

The net results of the trip include 1000+ images, a bunch of HD video and audio field recordings. Needless to say. I’ll be in serious image and video edit mode once the semester starts.

Here are a few teaser images from the trip.

Layover

Germany here I come.

August 1st, 2008

I leave for Berlin this afternoon to then pick ups car and Head up to Prora to commense a new project. The site is home to a never completed Nazi resort. The scale is immense as it was intended to house 22,000 vacationers. From what I understand, it is partially in ruins. It is my intent to make some new work which explores the site as an example of architecture used to push forward a political ideology. We’ll see. I hope to post more images and in process thoughts.

we, a collaborative work by  Yevgeniya Kaganovich, Dale Kaminski and I will be shown at the John Michael Kohler Center of the Arts in Sheboygan, WI. The piece is a part of the exhibition Under Surveillance. The exhibition is open from June 29-September 28th.

we  is an audio surveillance work which collects sound from an array of six microphones attached to weather balloons. The signals are fed to a listening station which reprocesses and combines the samples while maintaining the privileged position of the listener. The piece is inspired by the dystopic novel We by  Yevgeny Zamyatin.

settled mostly

February 11th, 2008

So…I finally have the studio about 90% unpacked which is good because deadlines for work are fast approaching. Foremost on my mind is the arrival of daughter number two. It is a matter of days and we are all quite excited. As for the art, I’m working frantically to get an installation and curated dvd out to the digital media show in Spain. After that I’ll begin work on my paper for the Center for International Education Conference/UW-Milwaukee. I’m working on a piece about public ephemeral media art. I’ll write more as it solidifies.

new beginning

box stackOk, so today the movers are here in Milwaukee packing us for the relocation to Chicago, so in an inspired [read insane] moment of web activity I have relaunched meme01 as a blog. You can still find the old site linked in my blogroll.
